5 REASONS WHY HILL REPS ARE A GREAT ADDITION TO ANY RUNNING PROGRAM

  1. Hitting the hills once a week as a specifically targeted session will make you a stronger, fitter runner.

  2. As you grow stronger, your stride becomes more efficient and your speed improves, making you also a faster runner

  3. Impact forces are much less when running uphill, so this can help reduce the risk of overuse injuries associated with impact, so you can train more consistently day-to-day

  4. An absolute essential for any longer trail races as they usually include a fair bit of vert. Vert uses the muscles in different ways so you need to condition them accordingly.

  5. Hill reps will help you increase that all important VO2 max (maximal oxygen consumption)

Hill reps should be used as part of a well rounded running program and there are a ton of different ways to approach them.

I've been doing 10 x 2mins on a very steep hill - this is not ideal for a beginner.
